Situated on the Deccan Plateau,
Pune is situated at the
foot of the Parvati Hills. A steep 108 step climb leads to the Parvati
Temple atop the hills, that provides a bird's eye view of Pune. Called the
cultural capital, it is nestled between cotton and paper mills, metallurgy
plants, distilleries and an ammunition factory. The Indian Army's southern
command is headquartered here.
Also known as a centre of education, the
nationally acclaimed Pune University Campus remains one of the country's
best known seats of learning. The Shaniwarwada Palace built in 1736 by the
Peshwas and the Raja Kelkar Museum, a quaint Rajasthani styled building
with an interesting personal collection of artifacts and antiques are some
of the places of interest. The ohel David Synagogue is believed to be one
of the largest in the world. The Rajneesh Ashram, or the Osho Ashram as it
is popularly called, is also a major attraction for tourists.
Pune - Known as the Queen of the
Deccan, it is the cultural capital of Maharashtra. It has a temperate
climate surrounded by beautiful hills and Sinhagad Fort. Pune or
Punyanagri, as it is called, has had a glorious past of nearly 1000 years.
This sprawling metropolis conjures up a myriad images - ancient forts,
ornate palaces, lush gardens, shopping arcades, educational institutions
and rolling hills. Few attractions here are : Lal Deval (Synagogue), Bund
Garden, Osho International Commune, Aga Khan Palace, Shindyanchi Chhatri,
Pataleshwar Cave Temples, Shaniwar Wada, Parvati Hill and Temples, Raja
